3.2 How to add Geofilters

ABOUT: Snapchat Geofilters can be categorized as a Filter which you can put over your Snap, as a kind of layer. In our explanation on Snapchat Filters, we are explaining how Snapchat Filters work, so you might also be interested in having a look over there too.

Snapchat describes Geofilters as “a fun way to share where you are, or what you’re up to, by adding a fun overlay to your Snap.” The examples below give some image of what Geofilters could be like, for example in Amsterdam. Where Amsterdam is just an example, there are thousands of Geofilters available all over the world. There are possibilities to upload your own Snapchat ‘Community Geofilter’ or to purchase an On-Demand Geofilter, so there’s enough to explain.

Find out how to add Geofilters to your own snaps.

What are Snapchat Geofilters?

Snapchat Geofilters can be categorized as a Filter which you can put over your Snap, as a kind of layer. Geofilters are Filters which are based on location, so they can be used dependent on the place where you are. There are thousands of Geofilters available all over the world. The examples show the diversity of Snapchat Geofilters, so it becomes more clear what they look like. Snapchat talks about ‘dynamic art for different places’, and the colorful diversity of the Geofilters really show this.

With the Geofilters you’re in fact sharing your current location, without explicitly saying where you are. The visual representation of something near your location helps explaining this. If you have your location enabled on your smartphone and given Snapchat permission to use your location, you will be able to use Geofilters. If you are in a location where there’s no Geofilter then you probably won’t find one. If you want to find out more on how to turn on your location, you can read it in our guide.

How to find Snapchat Geofilters?

Unfortunately, there is no public map (yet) of all the available Geofilters. In order to ‘find all’ Snapchat Geofilters, you should really go out and explore the world! Of course this isn’t the most realistic idea, but it is something to think about. If you’re just sitting inside, almost nothing will happen. Yes, you may be lucky if you have one or a couple Geofilters which also work at the location of your house, but most of the Geofilters are out there.

When walking around and of course taking Snapshots so you can share the world around you, you can always check out whether there’s a (new) Geofilter around. Sometimes the smallest towns have one, but a large city doesn’t. This really depends on whether Snapchat and it’s community have uploaded one for the specific area. You can read more on Community Geofilters below.

Within a large city there could be various Geofilters spread across the city, for example when there are multiple (famous) signs which are worth taking photos of. Also, there could be some national or regional Geofilters, for example the Geofilters during the Olympic Games.

How to add a Snapchat Geofilter to your Snap?

Adding a Snapchat Geofilter to your Snaps is very easy. If you have read our explanation of how to use Snapchat Filters, you might already know it.

STEP 1: The first step in discovering how to add a Geofilter to your Snap is that you will have to take a Snap to discover this feature.

STEP 2: After you have taken the Snap, you can easily swipe left or right so the Filters and Geofilters appear. Most of the times, the Geofilters can be recognized by the visual aspects, where the ‘normal’ Filters are looking more basic.

STEP 3: If the Geofilters appear, you can easily swipe through the available Geofilters available for your current location. If there are multiple Geofilters available, you should make a choice, because you can only use one for each single Snap.

Sometimes it might take some time before the Geofilters appear. This has to do with your internet connectivity and location preciseness. If you can’t find any Snapchat Geofilters on locations where there should be some, you should check your location settings. Read more about location settings here.

If still no Geofilters appear even after you made sure your location settings were correct, there might be another button you have to tap. Within Snapchat, you can select whether you would like to see Filters, and you can turn this on or off. Go to Snapchat Settings, tap ‘Manage’ under Additional Services. There you can find the ‘Filters’ button, which you can turn on.

You can also upload your own Geofilter! Go to the next page to find out how. 🙂
